After the OrthoManhattan team spent a weekend in Las Vegas at the Musculoskeletal Ultrasound and Orthobiotics training course, our surgeons sat down to discuss the potential of ultrasound as a diagnostic tool for musculoskeletal issues. Here’s how this advancement impacts our patients.

Why ultrasound in Orthopedics?

“Ultrasound is a non-invasive, rapid method to evaluate some musculoskeletal conditions that can be performed in our office during the office visit. Also, the patient is not exposed to any radiation.”

Not having to leave the office means a quicker diagnosis and starting treatment sooner. These kinds of things can have a big impact on the patient outcome  — allowing them to get back to living active, pain-free lives!

What are the specific benefits of using ultrasound versus another diagnostic method?

“Ultrasound can help diagnose certain masses, evaluate tendon and ligament disorders, and guide the surgeon to accurately place therapeutic steroid injections.”

With many different types of diagnosis methods, ultrasound is truly one of the most versatile. While x-rays and MRIs will remain the preferred diagnostic method in some cases, an ultrasound does not expose patients to radiation and can be a more cost-effective option for those paying out of pocket.

Examples of ultrasounds being used in the OrthoManhattan office

“A patient was told that the mass in her hand is definitely not a tumor but a benign ganglion cyst. Another patient watched on the ultrasound monitor as I injected a therapeutic steroid injection into his shoulder joint. He could actually see on the monitor the fluid that I was injecting into the proper location.”

It’s important to us that patients receive personalized care, giving them the peace of mind that they’re well on their way to living pain-free.  We explain your diagnoses in detail, discuss your treatment options, and provide clear expectations for your treatment outcome. As an OrthoManhattan patient, you’ll not only know what the doctor is doing but be able to see first hand — removing any anxiety around diagnosis and treatment.
